Description

1509 Dhaan, or Pusa Basmati 1509, is a revolutionary early-maturing rice variety that has become a top choice for farmers in the Basmati belts of North India. It was specifically developed to tackle the challenges of water scarcity and long crop cycles, offering a high-quality yield in a much shorter timeframe.

The "Early Bird" Advantage

The most striking feature of 1509 Dhaan is its speed. While traditional Basmati varieties like 1121 can take up to 145 days to mature, 1509 is ready for harvest in just 115 to 120 days.

  • Sowing Window: Usually transplanted in July.

  • Water Saving: Because it matures quickly, it requires significantly fewer irrigations (about 5–6 fewer rounds) compared to late-maturing varieties, saving precious groundwater.

  • Plant Structure: It is a "semi-dwarf" variety (around 95–100 cm tall). This shorter height makes the plant sturdy and prevents it from falling over (lodging) during heavy rains or winds.

Why It’s a Profit-Maker for Farmers

1509 Dhaan is often called the "Smart Balance" for a reason:

  1. Double Cropping: Since it clears the field by early October, farmers have ample time to prepare the soil for the next Rabi crop (like Wheat or Mustard) without any rush.

  2. Higher Yield: It offers a robust average yield of 4.2 to 6.5 tons per hectare, which is often higher than older, traditional Basmati types.

  3. Non-Shattering: The grains stay firmly on the plant until harvest, meaning less waste in the field.

Grain Quality & Market Price

In the mandi, 1509 is known for its extra-long slender grains. After cooking, the rice elongates beautifully and remains soft and fluffy.

  • Mandi Bhav Tip: While 1121 often fetches a higher premium due to its extreme length and aroma, 1509 is highly preferred for bulk exports and mid-segment markets because of its competitive pricing and reliable cooking quality.

  • Aroma: It possesses a pleasant, mild fragrance that makes it a favorite for daily household use and catering.
