Description
Chickpea, commonly known as Chana in India, is one of the most important pulse crops globally. It is a hardy leguminous crop that plays a vital role in soil health and human nutrition.
Scientific Name: Cicer arietinum
Types: Desi Chana: Small, darker seeds with a rough coat (high fiber). Kabuli Chana: Larger, beige seeds with a smooth coat.
Climate: It is a Rabi (winter) crop in India. It thrives in cool, dry weather and requires a temperature range of 20°C to 25°C for optimum growth.
Soil: Best grown in well-drained sandy loam to clay loam soils. It does not tolerate waterlogging.
Nitrogen Fixation: Like other legumes, chana has root nodules that house Rhizobium bacteria. These bacteria convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form the plant can use, effectively fertilizing the soil for the next crop cycle.
Drought Tolerance: It has a deep taproot system, making it quite resilient in areas with limited rainfall or receding soil moisture.
Nutritional Value: A powerhouse of plant-based protein, carbohydrates, and essential minerals like iron and magnesium.
Commercial Products: Beyond whole grains, it is processed into Besan (gram flour), which is a staple in Indian households and the food processing industry.
Pests: The Pod Borer (Helicoverpa armigera) is the most significant threat during the flowering and pod-setting stages.
Diseases: Wilt and Root Rot are common soil-borne issues, often managed through seed treatment and crop rotation.
