Mungfali: All Prices are in Quintal
Description
Groundnut, popularly known as Mungfali or the "King of Oilseeds," is a unique crop that grows its pods underground. In India, it is a vital commercial crop that supports millions of farmers, particularly in rainfed regions. It’s not just a snack; it’s a powerhouse of protein and healthy fats.
Mungfali is primarily a Kharif (monsoon) crop, though it is also grown in the summer where irrigation is available. It has a fascinating growth habit called "pegging"—after the flowers are pollinated, they lean down and push into the soil, where the actual peanuts develop.
Sowing Window: Usually June to July (Kharif) or January to February (Summer).
Climate: It loves warm weather and bright sunshine. A temperature range of 25°C to 30°C is ideal for a heavy harvest.
Soil Requirements: It thrives in sandy loam or well-drained sandy soils. Heavy clay is avoided because it makes it difficult for the "pegs" to enter the ground and harder to harvest the pods without breaking them.
Mungfali offers more than just the market price of the nuts:
Soil Enrichment: Being a legume, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, which reduces the need for chemical fertilizers for the next crop in the rotation.
High-Value Fodder: The green leaves and haulms (vines) left after harvest are excellent, protein-rich feed for cattle.
Oil & Export Demand: India is a leading exporter of groundnuts. The demand from oil mills and the peanut butter industry keeps the mandi prices competitive.
If you are tracking Mungfali Mandi Bhav, the price is largely determined by the shelling turnover (the ratio of seed to shell) and the moisture content. Buyers look for pods that are dry, bright in color, and free from aflatoxin (a type of mold).
