New Delhi | May 7, 2026. The Union Cabinet has officially greenlit the Kapas Kranti Mission (Cotton Revolution Mission), an ambitious initiative designed to modernize cotton farming and establish India as a global leader in high-quality fiber production.
The mission builds upon the successful foundation laid in late 2025 with an initial ₹600 crore outlay.
The Akola Model: Following the success of HDP in Maharashtra’s Akola region, the government is now replicating these scientific methods in Telangana and other major cotton belts.
Increased Productivity: By allowing more plants per unit area and using scientific spacing, HDP significantly boosts the yield of long-staple cotton, reducing India's dependence on expensive imports.
The mission leverages the "Kapas Kisan App" to bring transparency to the field.
Track real-time market prices.
Streamline procurement through digital slot booking.
Bypass middlemen to ensure they receive the full benefit of the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
With domestic demand expected to reach 450 lakh bales by 2030-31, the mission focuses on:
Scientific Research: Developing climate-resilient and pest-resistant seeds.
Enhanced Fiber Quality: Focusing on extra-long staple (ELS) cotton to feed high-end textile factories.
The mission is a critical component of the government's 5F Vision (Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign).
The Kapas Kranti Mission is specifically targeted at increasing farmer income in states like Telangana and Maharashtra, where cotton is a lifeline.
"The Kapas Kranti Mission is not just about growing more cotton; it’s about growing it smarter. By integrating the Kapas Kisan App and High-Density Plantation, we are making our farmers globally competitive." — Ministry Spokesperson
